Projection Mapping on to the Royal Society of Edinburgh

Though the content of this projection mapping project lacked the power of the multi-million pound campaigns of Nike and Adidas or the “jaw dropping” performance of the Toyota Yaris event (London), it was still particularly encouraging to see such a spectacle happening on the streets and buildings of Edinburgh. Ali Bowden (Project Director) and the teams involved should be particularly proud of challenging the establishment to make greater use of our urban environment through our rich cultural and intellectual heritage. The project, which has also included the words of David Hume projected on to the Melville Monument in St Andrew’s Square.

The project is dedicated to enlightening the city with the history of the enlightenment articulating spaces, meaning and important figures of the movement. As Ali stated to me this project is an important test bed that opens the possibility of Edinburgh becoming more switched on to the facades that line our city streets and how we may use them?

Have a look for yourself visit the sites and the web presence and show your support for progressive digital displays. You never know in the future it could be your work up there.

A New Digital Enlightenment

Learn from the past, present it again, make it accessible.

TONIGHT 8:30pm Edinburgh Learn what people are doing to re-enlighten us through the knowledge and intellect of the past:

http://enlightenedinburgh.wordpress.com/2012/03/07/social-media-call/

This year’s final year atelier students should remember the proposal that started their projects and see the importance of what other people do.

———————————————————————————————————-

A New Digital Enlightenment - “REALM exceeds all expectations of reality” (Atelier Brief)

“ When investigating new architecture for expression, a key source of discouragement comes from one’s subconscious denial of the illogic presented before her. It is important not to forget that your conscious actions represent the courageous act of reaching deep into the chaotic mist of possibilities and extracting a small discernable, volume of hope.”

John Maeda

A New Digital Enlightenment

The Enlightenment changed the way Western European’s viewed the world and our place within it. Throwing off the shackles of religious doctrine; man was put at the center of purpose and his tools were science, reasoning, technological advancement and deep new thinking. The understanding of the man and his ability to control, manage, question and understand his influence as an individual pushed and changed the political spectrum; how he engaged with society and the world around them; and how he conducted his life and business. Furthermore it generated scientific platforms that would help change the nature of art and creativity. This science and technology based approach was not without criticism (no matter how influential) with responses that encouraged emotional, irrational and romantic views embodied in ‘Counter-Enlightenment’.

The ‘Enlightenment’ generated huge swathes of published thinking, shared science and technologies In the light of this view of human-technological advancement we are seeing new ways in which to be ‘enlightened’. It affects everything from the way we live and conduct our lives through to the arts and our entertainment, and to the opportunities afforded our personal creativity.

“Thus our task is to make a new kind of artist (designer)… We wish to make him conscious of his creative power, not scared of new facts, and independent of formulas in his own work.”

Bruno Munari

However, with greater understanding we generate greater blurring at the boundaries.  Equally a meshing of science and technology with design, art and architecture that embed the import of emotions and experience has created a very interesting creative platform. This melting pot has further been stretched pushed and pulled by the rise of the prosumer, the intellect of the audience and the need for irreverent commentary, questioning and reasoning.

“New Hybrids of design are emerging. People don’t fit in neat categories; they’re a mixture of artists, engineers, designers, thinkers. They’re in that fuzzy space and might be finding it quite tough, but the results are really exciting”

Tony Dunne

The Designers Role

With this in mind how do you think you might explore the themes of a ‘new digital enlightenment’? Would “counter-enlightenment” with its emotional and irrational understandings need to be part of and as one with this ‘new digital enlightenment’? How might this view of progression make your own personal design interests groundbreaking and exciting? As a designer you will explore the very loose framework above to drive your inspiration to generate your own briefs that will formulate your dissertation and major project.

You should all be looking at your work and asking if you have something good enough to enter. If the answer is yes, go for it.

Friday 10th

Week 4 – Friday 10th February -3rd Year Studio 2

You will be giving developed concept-pitches to the music students on Friday morning at 9:15. Your presentations will frame what you are exploring and how you intend to communicate content and themes related in your exhibition. You will present in such a way that the music students will have a clear idea of the intents and interactions of your designs. This will allow for them to start composing music for your solutions.

Expectations

Your pitch is the equivalent of an elevator pitch that will be the groundwork for conversation to develop from. Therefor your pitch can be no more than 2 minutes. You will be giving one-to-one presentations to find a partner to work with. This means you will not be standing up and presenting to the entire group.

The digital form of your pitch can be static images, sketches, moving image, animation or any other relevant form of media in the form of a slide show, pdf or app.

You should have your presentation on an electronic device (Laptop, iPad, Tablet, Smart Phone?) to show any person you are talking to.

Location

This is a speed-networking event. That will be hosted at Craighouse Campus in Room 301 (Newcraig Building), Friday 10th February between 9:15 and 10:30.

All of you must attend!

Anna Dimmock Wins Waterstones Design Competition

Graduate of Design and Digital Arts, Anna Dimmock has proven the continued value and success of students from the programme as they venture in to practice.

The last couple of years, Waterstones have run an illustration competition called ‘Picture This’ in which the task was to illustrate a double page and character sketches for a picture book written by a well known author (last year it was Julia Donaldson and this year was Michael Morpurgo). The winner gets to illustrate the whole book. However, as an employee of I Waterstones, Anna was precluded from entering. Recognising in-house talent this year, the bookselling giant, ran a separate Bookseller version of the competition. The same task of producing double page and character sketches for a different publication was introduced.

“It was for a picture book version of Beauty and the Beast so it caught my interest straight away. I won it.”
Anna Dimmock

Congratulations go out to Anna. As a result of Anna’s strong web-based talent I have also recommended her to an industry specialist, who approached me looking for new talent. My hopes of continued success go out to her and hope that this new opportunity leads to more awards.

Design and Digital Arts WOWee-d

WOWee One the cutting edge portable speaker currently being offered and promoted by MTV, is currently undergoing an experience driven makeover by the students of Edinburgh Napier University’s Design and Digital Arts students. Working with Kevin McGonigal of SFX Technologies, the students have been given the task to create experience driven creative mathods for promotion of their active speaker the WOWee One. The device is capable of making surfaces in to an extension of its own sound output giving deeper and more powerful base and offering a more dynamic range of sound.

“The problem is that so many of our advertising and communications regarding the WOWee One are graphics based or heard through other peoples speakers”

Kevin McGonigal

“This exciting project has been given the opportunity to let the students work with a progressive specialist design consultancy who are currently experiencing huge support from and association with MTV. For us SFX offer a brilliant opportunity with a fantastic collaborative partner.”

Euan Winton, Programme Leader Design and Digital Arts

The project that culminates this week has been a live brief and SFX are putting forward prizes to the 3 most successful and inspiring designs.

SFX technologies are extremely excited about what the students will achieve from this project and the prospect of finding some ingenious new ways to explore their own product range. Their input and support shows just how valuable the link between education and industry can be.

“Kevin has been involved in this project at launch, interim crits and final presentations which has given the students a great opportunity to understand and realize the requirements of the client. This has been a rich project and one that both the students and I as Programme Leader have found enlightening”

Rebecca Gischel - Smiling?

Exchange student Rebecca Gischel has been designing ways to make us happier as part of her work for Design and Digtal Arts. The student who is here on international exchange from Ravensburg, identified the difference between her home town Stuttgart and Edinburgh as one concerning external appearance of happiness. With this is a stimulus she went out and started to spread a smile.

Rebecca beemed “this is the best hobby I ever had”.

Projecting, in public places, a short animated loop, Rebecca created a public intervention, with no other purpose than to spread a timely share of cheer. Creating a film of the project she then used social media to spread knowledge and understanding of her project generating enough interest to become a feature on the Groupon website. Since then she has been featured in the German press and has been booked by SWR3 the German radio station to discuss her project and to spread the smile.

“What a great project, sometimes we forget just how much little changes can affect our mood. Rebecca had an idea and went out and made it happen. Her enthusiasm and presentation of the work made it a real joy to behold. The great thing is she doesn’t want to stop here.”

Euan Winton, Programme Leader Design and Digital Arts

Sharing cheer and joy at this time of year; considering the current economic climate is a noble pursuit, and maybe we should all remember to smile costs nothing.
